Facebook users can use Timeline, the site’s new profile layout, to turn their lives into a movie. Marketing Agency Definition 6 and Facebook have released Timeline Movie Maker, an app that automatically parses your Timeline profile to create about a 55-second movie from your memories stored in the social network.

Facebook is hoping that more companies will be encouraged to take advantage of Timeline and create more novel apps for people to view and experience their new profile. "We think there will be lots of companies that come up with fun, innovative ways for people to extend the Timeline experience," a Facebook official told PCWorld.

Of course, that may raise the hackles of privacy advocates concerned about how a Timeline app could misuse information it is allowed to access. But it's important to keep in mind that Movie Maker and any subsequent apps are completely optional and no one is forcing users to share their data with third-party companies.

YouTube Video Editor 2 Years ago

The blog post to announce a new video editor introduced for YouTube this week starts off with a jab at professional editing software: "Video editing usually requires installing software packages and having a fair amount of technical savvy. But we think video editing should be fun and easy."

But the makers of professional editing software need not worry - yet. The YouTube editor, as it is now, is hardly a contender.

In fact, YouTube's free video editing software illustrates the old saying, "You get what you pay for." I understand that the editor is just a lab tool that the company is only now starting to share but you can hardly compare what YouTube is offering today to anything that is even remotely professional.

The problem is that the tools that YouTube is offering can hardly be considered video editing tools. They're more like mashup tools - and the experience is pretty limited. I guess that's the difference between creating any old video and trying to put together a mini "movie."

With all of that said, if YouTube decides to go beyond basic video trim and simple audio overlays - maybe add in some transitions and basic audio editing - the experience could also be fun, as well as simple. Right now, it's just simple - almost too simple.

Maybe this is enough for the old YouTube crowd, the one that wasn't really too serious about quality videos. But if Google is serious about elevating the overall YouTube offering - from the types of videos on the site, as well as the quality of them - then I would have hoped that the company would put a bit more oomph behind an editing tool before even thinking about sharing it with the general public.

Apple's iMovie, for example, is hardly a product for professionals - but it has a fair amount of features that make it worth the attention of amateur or even semi-professional movie makers. And adding the editing feature to the iPhone, as the company showcased recently, is a nice complement to the product.

If you're looking for a quick, cheap and easy way to mashup a couple of YouTube videos and quality is not high on your priority list, then I would suggest giving this a try. Otherwise, I'd suggest hanging on to your existing video editor and leaving the YouTube editor the teeny-bopper movie makers who want to throw together some clips for a few laughs.

Timeline Movie Maker from Facebook

In January 2012,Facebook launched a new app called Timeline Movie Maker, which creates a movie highlighting moments from your Timeline (you'll thus need to get the new profile if you don't have it yet, in order to use this app). Marketing agency Definition6 built the app with Facebook, and Definition6 CTO Paul Hernacki just made the announcement via Twitter: "Pure awesomeness- Facebook and @Definition6 are proud to launch www.timelinemoviemaker.com - Make an instant movie of your Facebook content."

There are no instructions: just a green "Make Your Movie" button. After you click it, you're asked to install the app. As you can see in the screenshot above, the app requires that you give it access to your basic info, your e-mail address, your profile info (activities, birthday, hometown, Likes, location, relationship status, religious views, political views, and work history), as well as your stories (events, photos, videos, and posts with location). If you're comfortable with that, your one-minute movie will be built automatically for you. Timeline Movie Maker is initially only available in English, French, Spanish, and German.
Your video only takes a few minutes to create (during the process you'll see a few photos from your Timeline in the background). It works by evaluating the content you have shared with the public and with friends, and then identifies the most engaging and relevant life moments to build a chronological story for your customized mini-movie.

Once the app is done, you can watch the movie, as well as choose accompanying music (five soundtracks to choose from) and/or change photos, videos, check-ins, and so on. When you're satisfied, you can share your Timeline movie with your Facebook friends. Unsurprisingly, there doesn't seem to be an option to share it elsewhere, such as on YouTube.

The app is clearly Facebook's attempt to build up hype around Timeline, or at least get its user more comfortable with it. Last week, the company started pushing all its users to Timeline, so it makes sense to start promoting the feature. What better way to do that than by getting your member base to do the advertising for you?

Less than two weeks ago, the domains timelinemoviemaker.com (Whois), timelinemoviemaker.net (Whois), and timelinemoviemaker.org (Whois) were privately registered. Some speculated that Facebook was thus building a movie maker app for Timeline. Given that Facebook rarely builds apps itself, and instead lets partners build apps for its platform, I wasn't so sure. When the domain started redirecting to facebook.com/about/timeline, however, I vowed to keep an eye on it since Facebook is clearly the owner.

Today I discovered that the domain had stopped redirecting and is being used to host content. This seems to have happened quietly: I don't see an announcement from Menlo Park. I have contacted Facebook and will update you if I hear back.
